Rohit Sharma ‘Promises’ To Take Decision To Quite Captaincy

Rohit Sharma ‘Promises’ To Take Captaincy Threat To BCCI In Meeting, Report That He Will Resign After.

India’s Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma has intimated BCCI about time frame after which he will relinquish the leadership position in the team.

India’s Test and ODI skipper, Rohit Sharma, had detailed discussions with the BCCI bigwigs and chief selector Ajit Agarkar during a virtual meeting on Saturday. Other attendees in the meeting included India head coach Gautam Gambhir, who was part of the Young Indians who opted to challenge the senior players for responses on the recent poor results, including the 1-3 Border-Gavaskar series loss to Australia and 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand. It has been mentioned in the meeting, that Rohit wants to be the captain of the team for a few more ‘months’.

Doubts about Rohit’s future in the longer format of the game grew even further in the course of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to his batting performances. Rohit even decide to give up his place for the final match in Sydney, but India again lost that game as well.

While the meeting with BCCI where Agarkar and Gambhir also spoke their mind, Rohit reportedly told the board he wants to continue as the team’s captain for another few months. On the other hand, the BCCI has been instructed by Rohit to continue the process of hunting for a new captain.

As per a report in Dainik Jagran, during the proposed meeting, the name of Bumrah as Rohit’s long term replacement has been suggested but there are still few who do not see merits in his case. The specific concern that was made against Bumrah was whether he has it in him to lead the team in a 5-match Test series.

Bumrah was also on the India tour of Australia wherein he played all five Test matches including as a stand-in captain for two of them. However, he aggravated his back during the last test match at Sydney and did not bowl in the second innings.

It is fitness problems like these with the country’s premier fast bowler that must have the top brass questioning his longevity as a captain.

Rohit wants to continue as India’s captain in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy after which the players will operationalise their IPL contracts. Following the end of the T20 league, India is to face England in the 5-match Test series. There is still uncertainty of whether Rohit will lead the Test team for that event.

The BCCI could take decision on India’s long term captaincy as well during this phase.
