BCCI Says Report, Calls Meeting With Gautam Gambhir. Two Of The Top Players Of Indian Cricket Team Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma May Be Provided

Kohli and Sharma’s future as leading batters will be debated in detail in a meeting that head coach Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will have with BCCI officials to review the recent tour to Australia on Saturday. The loss of consecutive series to New Zealand at home, and Australia away and the decreasing batting performance have put Kohli and Rohit in the firing line.

The PTI has come to realize that the authorities will go into the finer coups of the future course – whether to flick the switch for a change-over from the next month’s Champions Trophy or to wait for the cycle to run out with the ICC marquee event.

The future of leading batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be the highlight of a meeting that head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will have with BCCI officials to review the recently concluded series in Australia on Saturday. Even though there might be an opportunity for the senior batters to prove themselves in the ODI Champions Trophy since they are always successful in this format.

They may also factor in the realisation that both Kohli and Rohit have featured in only three ODIs in 2024 after the 2023 World Cup at home, and that could be too small a sample size on which to base a definitive judgement about their 50-over future.

Similar fate was shared between Kohli and Rohit in the series against Sri Lanka as well.

While Kohli was able to score 24, 14 and 20 on the Lanka tour, it was Rohit who scored 58, 64 and 35 against the Lankans.

But in overall, Kohli has proved a champion performer in 50-overs, his favourite format and a good show in Champions Trophy can bring him in good zone, as can Rohit too.

The two also experienced varying fortunes in the series against Sri Lankan as well as Kohli in the series.

However, their Test future is different. The next assignment is an away five-match series against England, and the mandarins will undoubtedly look at the drying runs from Kohli and Rohit in the test format.

In the last match against Australia, Kohli could score only 190 runs at an average of 23.75 although he made hundred in Perth, and Rohit, who missed the first test match and then opted out of fifth test match also, could manage only 31 runs at 6.2.

Those performances will indeed be discussed extensively when engaging Gambhir on whether they want to persist with the longest form of the game.

Likewise, it might be done with the performance of the Gambhir-led coaching staff too; they might be asked about their plans to get through the transition phase without any more unnecessary stumbles.

The team to the Champions Trophy

In addition to the review meeting, the selectors, headed by Agarkar will assemble on Saturday evening to select the Indian team to the Champions Trophy.

India will get all its games in the UAE and its first match will be against Bangladesh on February 20.

But, it may not be that the team will be announced on this day itself as the selectors have till January 12 to release the squad.

They will gonna check up the availability of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been suffering from back spasms and Mohammed Shami.

Shami, who has not played since the ODI World Cup 2023 because of an ankle surgery, may get the green signal from BCCI’s Centre of Excellence physics.

Recently Shami has been playing in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy matches as part of the Bengal team so as to prove his fitness and match preparedness.

The other interesting point will be to see whether Yashasvi Jaiswal will get the nod after appearing in 19 Tests and 23 T20I since his debut in mid-2023.

Team for England T20Is, ODIs

The selectors are also supposed to debate and choose the India team for the Five T20Is and three ODIs on English soil for the home series starting from 22 January.

Shami can be included in the ODIs based on the fitness certificate from CoE which is believed to be positive but its impact will be analyzed before final acceptance.

Bumrah and other fast bowler Akash Deep who will also join CoE in Bengaluru to recover from a back issue will not available for the white-ball series against England.

Jaiswal will certainly be part of at least one of the squads though along with Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy who came as a revelation to everyone with his courageous performances Down Under.
